As expected, July 13th’s HITECH Final Rule issuance has brought about a new round of questions and concerns regarding EHR. Our HITECH program, taught by Donna Jennings, MBA, CPHQ, has been updated to include only the most recent information — we understand that even a single piece of out-of-date information is harmful with such sweeping changes.

By meeting eligibility criteria in 2011, you’ll position your organization to receive substantial incentive payments — $36 Billion is set aside for such incentives. Don’t let the HITECH Act learning curve block you from this funding… our HITECH Workshop can help!

Our HITECH Workshop provides you with:

Detailed overview of Meaningful Use & HITECH Act

Updated (as of this week!) summary of incentive eligibility criteria

Methods to overcoming challenges of implementing EHR: financial, existing systems and aggressive time lines set by the 2009 ARRA

Donna Jennings’ working understanding of HITECH and how to navigate the new terrain

And much more!

Are there certain areas of the HITECH Act that are of the most concern to you? Leave us a comment and we’ll pass your thoughts onto Donna Jennings — help us bring you the content you need!

The APA recently put out an RFP on their website for field trial site recruitment to start gaining real-world insights into the impact of the proposed changes to the DSM-V. Here is an excerpt from the story on their website:

“The DSM-5 Task Force is requesting proposals from academic and large general psychiatric, mental health specialty, and medical specialty settings to participate in the field trials of proposed DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, cross-cutting dimensional measures, and diagnostic-specific severity measures. Our objective is to assure that these proposed changes are subjected to rigorous and empirically sound field trials before DSM is released for general clinical and research use. As such, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) plans to field test the clinical utility, feasibility, reliability, and, where possible, validity of selected DSM-5 draft diagnostic criteria and associated dimensional measures across a variety of clinical settings. The initial phase of these field trials is set to begin in the summer of 2010 and continue through February 2011. The disorders selected for study in field trials include those with high public health significance and/or those with significant proposed changes to the diagnostic criteria. A list of the diagnoses planned for testing in the field trials can be found here. We are limiting this first round of contracted sites to U.S. locations but will consider international sites for the second wave of field trials. However, if international sites believe that they have the resources to carry out this wave 1 protocol, we will be happy to discuss how we can facilitate their participation.

An additional field trial in routine clinical practice settings covering all DSM-5 disorders will be conducted separately with a focus on clinical utility and feasibility but without a test-retest or validity component. This additional field trial will enroll a randomly selected sample of individual multidisciplinary clinicians as well as a sample who volunteer to participate. International participation will be feasible for the volunteer component of this “Practice Research Network” protocol, which will start later in the fall of 2010. The detailed protocol for this version of the field trial is available upon request.”

We simply call him Dr. Ric.

As one of our premier instructors you may have called him “wonderful, passionate, hands-on, or powerful,” as so many attendees of his Sensory Integration and Neurodevelopmental Treatment seminars have in their evaluation forms.

But during April 2010, officially designated as National OT Month, the American Occupational Therapy Association is calling Ricardo A. Carrasco (Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA) the latest recipient of the AOTA Award of Merit, the highest association honor for an occupational therapist.

The prestigious Award of Merit is intended to honor members of the AOTA who have made an outstanding global contribution to the profession of occupational therapy.

Dr. Ric is the CEO of FiestaJoy Foundation, through which he practices, teaches and conducts research studies in pediatric and adult occupational wellness, especially as they relate to sensory processing. He has more than 30 years experience as a consultant to professional associations, institutional committees, government agencies, and community based programs. And just for good measure Dr. Ric is a Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Occupational Therapy at the Medical College of Georgia School of Allied Health Sciences and Graduate Studies.

You know that when working with an occupational therapy practitioner, strategies and modifications are customized for each individual to resolve problems, improve function, and support everyday living activities. The goal is to maximize potential. Dr. Ric has spent his adult life doing this for clients with developmental disabilities across their lifespan.

But Dr. Ric promotes another ideal that endears him to the thousands of skilled professionals who attend his seminars – enhancing patient-centered care with a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. He receives the same top marks from special education teachers, physical and speech therapists, counselors, and administrators that he does from his fellow OTs.

And if you want to get inspired by Dr. Ric you can hear his conversation with Clear Channel’s Detroit Director of Community Affairs, Diane Cross on WNIC 100.3 on Sunday April 4th from 7-7:30 am.

So over the next month as you celebrate the occupational therapist’s purpose of getting beyond problems to the solutions that assure living life to its fullest think about the dedicated instructor whom you have said, “totally exceeds your expectations,” – simply think about Dr. Ric.
