Teachers, Continuing Education & a Shorter School Year

On May 9, 2011, WSMV-TV Nashville featured an interesting news story on a proposal to extend summer break for local students and teachers:

Right now, many schools dismiss in late May, before Memorial Day. In most districts, students head back to class in early August. The group Save Tennessee Summers wants to push that start date back, and there’s a good chance it could happen.

Rhonda Glass has a Hillwood High School student, and she said it seems like he goes back to school earlier and earlier every year.

“I think it should be later. Later on in August, it should be started instead of the beginning of August,” said Glass.

This school year, Wilson, Rutherford and Sumner counties schools all started the first week of August. Metro Schools and Williamson County started Aug. 12.

Some have said those early start times are being met with dread.
