Also,\u00a0exercise is linked to improved survival and a decreased risk of recurrence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends that adults should engage in:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least <u>5 hours to 5 hours<\/u> of exercise at <u>moderate intensity<\/u> per week<\/li>\n<li>Or 75 minutes to <u>5 hours<\/u> of exercise at <u>vigorous intensity<\/u> per week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The HHS also recommends that adults complete <u>strengthening exercises 2 or more days per week.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7878 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Girls-Doing-Yoga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Girls-Doing-Yoga-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Girls-Doing-Yoga-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Girls-Doing-Yoga-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Girls-Doing-Yoga-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Girls-Doing-Yoga.jpg 1125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/>The study included 1,340 women who were diagnosed with stage I, stage II, or stage III breast cancer with a high risk of recurrence. All the women had surgery to remove the cancer followed by chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The women completed questionnaires on their exercise routines before being diagnosed and their current exercise routines.<\/u><\/strong><strong> The questionnaires asked about:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What type of exercise the women completed<\/li>\n<li>How long they exercised<\/li>\n<li>How often they exercised<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>The women filled out the questionnaires four times<\/u><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When they enrolled in the study<\/li>\n<li>While they were undergoing chemotherapy treatment<\/li>\n<li>1 year after completing breast cancer treatment<\/li>\n<li>2 years after completing breast cancer treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7880 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Running.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Running.jpg 446w, https:\/\/blogcontent.summit-education.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Running-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The researchers discovered that women who met the minimum federal exercise guidelines of 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise per week, before and after being diagnosed with breast cancer, had:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 55% lower risk of recurrence compared to women who did not achieve the minimum guidelines<\/li>\n<li>A 68% lower risk of dying compared to women who did not achieve the minimum guidelines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, women who started exercising only after breast cancer treatment was completed got benefits from the physical activity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They had a 46% lower risk of recurrence<\/li>\n<li>43% lower risk of dying compared to women who didn\u2019t meet the minimum guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results also found that a few hours of consistent, weekly exercise led to the same survival benefits as exercising for longer periods of time each week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>So, I ask you, \u201cdo your patients<\/strong><strong> with breast cancer or a history of breast cancer exercise?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For more information, please see:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FdkjONmHYno\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The research was published online on April 2, 2020, in the\u00a0<em>Journal of the National Cancer Institute<\/em>.
