Children love this time of year because, well let\u2019s admit, they get free candy! In my books <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aapcautismbooks.com\/products\/learn-to-move-move-to-learn\"><em>Learn to Move, Move to Learn<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aapcautismbooks.com\/products\/learn-to-move-moving-up\"><em>Learn to Move, Moving Up!<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0 I created sensorimotor activity lesson plans based on Sensory Integration theory originally developed by A. Jean Ayres, PhD, OTR. Here are a couple of Halloween-Themed lesson plans adapted from my books with fun sensory and motor activities you can incorporate into your pediatric therapy practice.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Preschool Children<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Theme: Pumpkins<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Warm-Up:<\/strong> Action Poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rrcs.org\/Downloads\/Five%20Little%20Pumpkins%20Poem.pdf\">Five Little Pumpkins<\/a>\u201d. Incorporate hand and finger actions for fine motor skills. <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cm1qvX1ygOo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vestibular:<\/strong> Pumpkin locomotor relay. Color and cut a paper pumpkin. Hop, gallop, skip, and run with the pumpkin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proprioception:<\/strong> Carry a pumpkin to music. Start and stop the Halloween music while carrying a real pumpkin around.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balance:<\/strong> Paper pumpkin balance game. Tape a paper pumpkin to the floor. Balance on each foot for 10 seconds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eye-Hand Coordination:<\/strong> Orange balloon volley. Draw a jack o lantern face on a balloon. Bop the balloon back and forth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cool-Down:<\/strong> Book <em>How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow? <\/em>By Wendell Minor (Nancy Paulsen Books, 2013)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fine Motor:<\/strong> Tissue paper pumpkin. Draw a pumpkin on a paper plate. Tear orange paper and glue onto plate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Elementary School Children<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Theme: Halloween<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Warm-up:<\/strong> Halloween Actions. <em>&#8220;Stomp like monster. Fly like a witch. Dance like a skeleton. Howl like a wolf. Crawl like a spider. Walk like a Zombie. Float like a ghost. Laugh like a vampire.&#8221;<\/em> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-jieCxKqPk0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vestibular:<\/strong> Pumpkin patch obstacle course. Create a pretend pumpkin patch by placing large items around the room. Place paper pumpkins as props along the path. Hop, crawl, and skip through the obstacle course.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proprioception:<\/strong> Milk jug ghost game. Draw a ghost face on a milk jug. Fill the milk jug with water. Carry the jug around the room calling it \u2018pretend haunted house\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balance:<\/strong> Haunted bridge balance beam walk. Place paper ghosts along each side of a balance beam. Walk along the beam and pick up a paper ghost without falling off.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eye-Hand Coordination:<\/strong> Candy\/beanbag toss. Using bean bags, pretend to toss candy into a Halloween bucket.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cool-Down:<\/strong> Book <em>Inside a House that is Haunted<\/em> by Alyssa Satin<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fine Motor:<\/strong> Cotton ball ghost. Draw a ghost shape on white paper then cut it out. Next, draw the eyes and mouth.
