These demographic numbers are not consistent with the country\u2019s growing racial and ethnic diversity. Successfully recruiting and training more healthcare providers from underrepresented populations has been identified as a potential means of lessening the impact of health disparities on these populations. The purpose of this presentation is to assist individuals and institutions involved in the education and training of healthcare providers to understand the impact of the lack of diversity in healthcare. Strategies will be outlined for improving diversity, equity, and inclusion that have been used in training physical therapy professionals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits to Watching:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify ways in which the <strong>lack of diversity in healthcare directly impacts healthcare outcome<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Evidence-based strategies that educators can <strong>utilize to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Owens PT, ScD, OCS, CSCS, FAAOMPT <\/strong>graduated from the University of Connecticut and received a BS in the Allied Health Sciences Program in Physical Therapy in 1993. He became NSCA &#8211; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist in 1998 and a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist through the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine \u2013 US in 2002. He completed an APTA and AAOMPT accredited Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellowship and became an APTA Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist in 2006. Dr. Owens received his Doctor of Science from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in 2008. He joined the faculty at the Hampton University Department of Physical Therapy in August 2009. As part of his scholarly duties, he coordinates and teaches the Musculoskeletal Management, Research, Physical Agents, and Differential Diagnosis curriculum. Dr. Owens has published many peer-review articles and presented his research at conferences in orthopedic manual physical therapy, and diversity equity and inclusion in healthcare.
