A true understanding of ICU devices and their implications to the therapy plan of care is vital for all rehab specialists practicing in the ICU. According to “A Comprehensive Review of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices” (Atti etal 2022) more than 2000 MCS devices were implanted and according to “Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome” (Peeler et al 2021) ECMO runs in the US increased from 92 cases in 2008 to 3,133 in 2019. The use of these devices is for the bridge to recover to transplant. Knowledge of these devices, their implications, and their impacts with therapy is vital during the immediate therapy course as well as for any post-hospitalization course.

Angela Henning, PT, Cert MDT, CCS, CFPS received a BS in BIO from Centre College in 2000 and a BHsc with masters of PT from the University of Kentucky in 2003. She serves as APTA-KY Eastern District Chair, the Academy of Education CE SIG Clinical Co-Chair, and the Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Ethics Liaison. She has clinical experience with pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations in outpatient, acute care, ICU units, and specialty clinic units. She received her cardiovascular and pulmonary clinical specialist from ABPTS in 2019. She has assisted with protocol development, annual competency, and new hire training – specifically with transplant, ECMO, and MCS devices. Angie co-presented at CSM 2018 on Maximizing Outcomes of Survivors of Critical Illness: Research and Practice and co-authored “Physical Rehabilitation Delivered During and After Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): A Marker of Illness Severity, or an Indication of Recovery?”; “Physical Function Measured Before Lung Transplantation is Associated with Posttransplant Patient Outcomes”; and “Timing and Amount of Physical Therapy Treatment are Associated with Length of Stay in the Cardiothoracic ICU”.
