The Cerebellum and Development

Scientific advancements in the knowledge of the many functions of the cerebellum has exploded over the last several years. This structure known as the "little brain" was once thought to control only motor functions. Researchers now know that the cerebellum is an important structure for a multitude of functions. These many functions include motor control, coordination, rhythmic movement, executive functionskills, attention, and modulation of sensory input. Cerebellar dysfunction has been found to be associated with ADHD, autism, Parkinson’s disease, and other disorders.Using this new research, therapists can facilitate activation of this very important brain structure through rhythm, balance,and coordination activities.
