Additional Information

There is significant inconsistency in the training of Speech-Language Pathologists on appropriate assessment and intervention for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Thishas led to both an under and over diagnosis of CAS due to a misunderstanding of the diagnostic criteria and discriminating features that help Speech-Language Pathologists to differentiate CAS from other speech sound disorders. Additionally, there has been recent research which is helping to inform appropriate treatment approaches that are rooted in the principles of motor learning. These approaches have a focus on addressing the movement of speech rather than targeting sounds in isolation, which differentiates these approaches from traditional methodologies. This course will increase your knowledge of and confidence in differentially diagnosing CAS. We will discuss evidence-based treatment approaches to help your clients improve their motor speech skills. Participants will gain valuable insight on target selection and elicitation/cueing strategies to effectively treat children with CAS.
