Additional Information

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) defines cognitive communication disorders as difficulty with any aspect of communication that is affected by disruption of cognition. Some examples of cognitive processes include attention, working memory, thought organization, perception, problem solving/reasoning, processing speed, and executive functions. The cognitive processes are not isolated abilities; they work together. Deficits in one or more of these areas can affect both verbal and nonverbal communication. Speaking, listening comprehension, reading, writing, and pragmatic languageskills may be affected negatively. Cognitive communication deficits can affect daily social activities, acquisition of life skills, and academic performance. Children who have experienced right hemisphere brain damage, traumatic brain injury, a brain tumor, a lack of oxygen to the brain (anoxia), orother genetic disorders may have a cognitive communication deficit or delay.

the course description should indicate the level of practitioner for which the course is appropriate. this course was appropriate for an entry level provider, or someone w\/ only a few years of experience.

i really enjoyed this course and how it differentiated brain differences, injury, and disorders. i hope in the future for this course, the term mental r********** is no longer used in the lessons as it is an outdated term and offensive.

the course mostly focused on the different types of cognitive impairments that may exist and their potential causes. i would have liked more information on the actual treatment process.

i found this course to be a quick overview of the basics that i had already learned in graduate school. i had hoped that the majority of the course would focus on treatment but instead the majority was centered around what cognitive communication disorders are and how they present, which i already was well versed in.
