Additional Information

Sleep is a biological necessity and essential to health, well-being, and academic success (Ramar et al., 2021). The American Academy of Pediatrics (2020) estimates that 25- 50% of all children and 40% of adolescents are affected by sleep problems. Since so many children suffer from sleep issues, all healthcare providers need to recognize that sleep problems in children can mimic symptoms of ADHD, cause depression and anxiety, may be linked to depressed immune responses, and recent studies show a link to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity (Sleep Foundation, 2021). Children diagnosed with sleep disorders and those who get an inadequate amount of sleep struggle more academically and have a higher incidence of mental health problems in adolescence (Lam and Lam, 2021). Understanding how to improve sleep in the pediatric population can improve outcomes and improve the child and family's quality of life.

This course will teach clinicians how daytime and evening activities can improve or interfere with sleep quality. Using active learning strategies, participants will be able to provide caregiver education and will learn evidence-based sleep routines, balanced screen and activity time, and sensory strategy recommendations to support improved sleep in pediatric clients, which in turn improves family relationshipsand children's success in engaging in other important daily occupations. Participants will return to their practice withpractical strategies to improve children's sleep and rest, support families in improving sleep wellness, and decrease family stress (Ramar et al., 2021).

The content of this program is germane to children, students and clientsbirth-6 years old.
