Additional Information

As therapists, fall prevention is a major area of concern, and an area in which we play an integral role. For many, falls are a life-altering experience, either due to injuries or the psychological fear many experience after having a fall. Each year in the US, 3 million people have falls resulting in injuries serious enough to require medical attention. Falls continue to be the leading cause of death from injury in adults 65 and over in the US, causing more accidental deaths than motor vehicle accidents. Falls are also the number one cause of traumatic brain injuries, and the cause of more than 95% of hip fractures. One less talked about area related to falls is what occurs following the fall, whether an injury occurred or not. Fear of falling is a phenomenon that affects many olderadults and causes major changes in their socialization and daily routines.

As clinicians, we play a vital role in identifying and improving the mobility and lives of those at highest risk for falls. Through this course, you will be provided with valuable, evidence-based tools to assist you in taking a comprehensiveapproach while identifying and addressing various risk factors associated with falls. Through this approach, you will be more equipped to provide treatment interventions that lead to a reduction in the incidence of falls and hospital re-admissions for fall-related injuries.
