Additional Information

The term executive function (EF) refers to a group of interrelated cognitive processes and skills that allow individuals to plan and execute tasks, and to interact and communicate with others efficiently and appropriately. Thesecognitive processes may include anticipation, planning, monitoring internal and external events, interpretation of stimuli, use of feedback, self-regulation, and metacognition. Executive function also depends on certain foundationalcognitive functions successfully working together, such as attention, processing speed, and memory. Executive function deficits are present across various neurologic, psychological, and behavioral diagnoses. Multidisciplinary evaluation and consistent communication among the patient's team members are crucial, as executive function deficits affect multiple skills across the rehab disciplines.

Executive function deficits occur when there is a breakdown of any of these skills at any level. These breakdowns will likely impact an individual's ability to independently complete functional tasks, such as following schedules, completing multi-step projects, meeting deadlines, planning, navigating unknown settings and situations, and managing medications and finances. Difficulties in these areas will have a significant effect on an individual’s level of independence and quality of life.
