Aquatic physical therapy is an underused modality for theadult patient. The aquatic environment provides natural healing qualities and can supplement land-based exercise in patients with various diagnoses and impairments. Many individuals who may plateau or be unable to tolerate land- based physical therapy may excel in the aquatic environment.Clinicians who can offer aquatic physical therapy to their clientele will give their patients the tools to improve their physical mobility, reduce their pain and ultimately improve their quality of life.
This course will discuss the foundations of aquatic physical therapy and highlight the benefits of the aquatic environment. Research for aquatic physical therapy for various adult diagnoses/populations commonly seen in the clinic will be reviewed. An assortment of various aquatic exercises for strength, endurance and balance will be discussed so that upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to confidently initiate aquatic physical therapy with their clients.
