Additional Information

The evidence is robust and clear that for many individuals who sustain traumatic hand injuries with injury to tendons, nerves, and bone, can benefit from dynamic splinting postsurgery. Dynamic splinting prevents adhesions, maintains the suppleness of joints, and facilitates the healing of bone and soft tissue. It is well documented as to how dynamic splinting can also facilitate function in especially peripheral nerve injuries, immediately enhancing performance with all areas of occupational performance. This course will review the theory, indications, diagnosis, and precautions of advanced/dynamic splinting. Strategic principles to dynamic splinting will be addressed as well as the consideration for the anatomy involved within the splinting process. Step-by-step demonstration will take place relative to a hand-based dynamic (extension, contracture) splint. The participant will then fabricate the splint, recognizing how critical a properly selected static base is that will be followed by simply adding the componentry (outrigger, etc.) in a step-by-step order. This three-hour course will enhance one's ability to go back to your practice setting and generalize what was learned to other dynamic splint fabrication opportunities.

Highlights

  • Implementation of all advanced splinting principles (static base design, strapping, outrigger, dynamic traction choices) into the fabrication of a splint
  • Techniques for fast healing for patients who have sustained traumatic hand injuries with injury to tendons, nerves, and bone
  • Interactive practice labs to improve clinical thinking and reasoning relative to the step-by-stepconstruction of dynamic splints

Target Audience: Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Athletic Trainers
