Additional Information

The paradigm of concussion management has shifted from total rest to active recovery. Despite advances in the assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, and management of the patient with concussion and its varied sequelae, this shift emphasizes the need for ongoing research and new innovative methods to improve interdisciplinary care in concussion management. The complex nature of a concussive injury involves multiple systems and the overall heterogeneity of the patient, calling for collaborative efforts from the heath care team. The symptoms can vary from person to person, but typically fall into four categories: somatic (physical), cognitive, affective (emotional), and sleep. Professionals involved in the care after concussion mayinclude the physician, nurse practitioner (NP), physical therapist (PT), neuropsychologist, speech-languagepathologist (SLP), and occupational therapist (OT)functioning as the core medical team. Research shows anestablishment of a multidisciplinary clinic and providing a standardized protocol for concussion care results in significantly decreased institutional resource utilization and more consistent care among young patients with sports concussion.

This course will lay out an understanding of roles and responsibilities of PT, OT and SLP, interprofessional communication and team work as they pertain to management of a patient with concussion. PT lens will cover cervical, vestibular, and graded exercises prescription thatcan contribute to dizziness, head and neck pain, imbalance, fatigue, and reduced functional mobility. OT lens will coveraddressing visual deficits that can contribute to functionaldifficulties such as reading, poor concentration, headaches, fatigue, and reduced quality of life. SLP lens will cover cognitive deficits that can contribute to excessive fatigue, reduced attention and short-term memory, word-retrievaldeficit, slow processing, and reduced readingcomprehension. A case study of a patient with concussion will be used to discuss how each rehab discipline in their unique way contributes to the management of concussion. Also discussed will be how collaborative and transdisciplinary efforts between the healthcare providers performing as a high functioning team lead to efficient and successful management of this complex diagnosis.

just a very basic course, i was looking for something with more meat to it and more treatment stratigies

Alison (AL) on Dec 04, 2024

i absolutely loved this course. the instructor was extremely knowledgable. it gave me a great overall knowledge of concussion symptoms and the roles each discipline has in the treatment\/recovery process. my one negative, only relates to the closed caption not matching the words provided by the instructor. some parts were difficult to understand and it would have been helpful to have the words match what the instructor was saying.

i appreciated the visuals of some treatment equipment (such as laser head pointer) to use in treatment with these patients. also the information regarding some good tests to use with this population (i am an occupational therapist).
