The Clinician's Guide to HIPAA

It was August of 1996, when the Healthcare InsurancePortability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was signed into law. The original intent was to "improve portability and accountability of insurance" for employees between jobs. Also, the goal was to reduce fraud, waste and abuse in health insurance and health delivery. And there was stipulation in the original law for coverage for pre-existing health conditions and to simplify the administration of health insurance. Since then, additional provisions have been added national standards to protect privacy of all. TheClinician's Guide to HIPAA will assist the healthcare professional to better understand the history and purpose ofHIPAA as well as, the HCP role in protecting the rights and privacy of the patients/clients we serve.
